Shigeto is one of the most well respected artists in the electronic scene right now. His album Full Circle (2010) still remains as my favourite album of his, but his consistency year in, year out is what makes him so revered by so many. His second full-length album No Better Time Than Now (2013) is a critically-acclaimed masterpiece, using silky synth leads, jazz-inspired arrangements and on occasion, boom bap style production. 4 years later he is back with, to me, his most musically accomplished and intimate album to date, The New Monday.
Like a lot of dark and jazzy electronic albums, this is perfect night time music. With more of an influence on Detroit house music, this album is more geared towards the dancefloor, but Shigeto never leaves his jazz influences behind. ‘Detroit Part II’ is a gorgeous opener, a smooth silky jazz cosmic adventure. ‘In Case You Forgot’ is another example of slow jazzy undertones that make it a gorgeous listen. With contributions from rappers Zeeloperz and Silas Green, Shigeto doesn’t lose touch of his hip-hop roots either, keeping a tight and fantastic blend of dance, house, jazz and hip-hop music. The New Monday is a wonderful new addition to Shigeto’s already mesmerising discography.
