a few thoughts: not much is known about this enigmatic duo. the mysterious group has released “summer indoors (or outside wearing black),” a hypnotic 4-track ep with thumping, neck-breaking beats and catchy guitar and synth-led melodies with a relentless energy to them that are just infectious from start to finish. the rumbling basslines and heavy beat on “i wait, i sink” are both incredible, with a monotonous and brooding vocal delivery from the lead singer that complements the heavy beat and subtle guitar melodies. the dynamic groove of “so-perfect (combing)” is warm and textured, with guitar melodies and string leads creating this atmospheric and ethereal quality, complementing the soothing vocals and introspective lyrics reflecting on love and moving on. the striking and arresting “tourniquet” has this abrasive, off-kilter energy, with wailing guitar leads and a thunderous bassline that complement the vocals throughout, as it breaks off and into an almost cartoonish melody. “in yr right hand reveal heaven” is the standout closer on this special ep. as the band describe themselves, it’s “music from the castle of heaven, cool and warm”. they wrote the first half of the track, a menacing, bass-led melody, on the first floor of a glasgow flat at the end of winter, during a riper year of understanding. then the saddest thing ever happened to them, and they wrote the second half and glued it together in an east anglian attic. it’s a fragmented track with contrasting styles and energies, but brought together poignantly. the emotive and powerful second half of the track is truly breathtaking and wonderful, and i can feel the weight of their emotions and feelings. the healing power of horses has released an absolute gem of an ep with “summer indoors (or outside wearing black),” an unquestionably riveting and mesmerising body of work, with a rumbling, unassuming energy that keeps you engaged and hooked from start to finish.
