a few thoughts: devon rexi is a trio consisting of nicola reverda (nicolini), nushin naini and goya van der heyden (la rat). i’m yet to fully delve into their discography, but they’ve carved out their own sonic world, traversing krautrock, post-punk and psyched out dubby goodness. together with elusive producer john t.gast, they’ve released an experimental, dub-infused masterpiece titled breathstep. the vocals throughout are perfectly placed among the gritty warped out production, and there’s no better way to start than the title track, opening with a dubby groovy and emphatic vocals. the percussion-heavy “habitat ibiza” is a catchy, dynamic masterpiece, while the rumbling, high energy of “blade” is another captivating moment, while the grime and garage influenced beat on “mashrub” is so heavy and good. the synths on “flash flute” are pretty, as percussion rings throughout the track. “2furious” has an arab-influenced melody, and highly energetic percussive grooves that create this restless energy. the vocal sampling and effects on “misha (goa mix)” is terrific, while the bass-heavy “2furious (liberate mix)” is just incredible throughout. the disorienting “jigar” is cool too, while “breathstep (john’s phone remix)” is a psychedelic remix of the opener. a perfect way to conclude an immersive listening experience. devon rexi and john t. gast have released a gem of an album. breathstep is simply fantastic.
