a few thoughts: hackney-based producer and dj izco has released his highly anticipated debut album powerscroft, and it’s already one of london’s best albums this year. the broken-beat and jungle influences are explored through the sonic lense of this vibrant city. 12 tracks of highly dynamic, broken-beat grooves and rhythms that are immediately captivating and alluring. the album opens with “bluebell”, an uplifting and gorgeous cut, with vocals that float over a dancey, groovy composition. the catchy and heavy beat on “japan greatly” featuring reek0 and s.i is a vibe, while the slow-paced and feel-good jazzy cut “turn me on” is so beautiful. the groove on “dinero” featuring p wavey is hypnotic, with afro-house energy and an incredible verse that flows effortlessly throughout the dynamic grooves. “down 4” has incredible percussion and a great vocal feature from osquello. the dynamic “strike a pose” featuring camilla munn is an excellent garage record, while the frantic energy of “longest road” featuring pk is another fantastic track. “komodo” might be my favourite off the album. the colourful and textured broken-beat of this track is incredible. the energy of it is utterly infectious and entrancing. “somebody jump” featuring reek0 is another beautifully melodic cut, with heavy percussion and drumming that carry the energy of the track. “wonderluv” feels very the avalanches inspired was my first thought after that soul sample and frantic drumming kicked in. the guitar melodies throughout the heavy rhythms of this track are beautiful, and feels very joyful throughout. “tek control” featuring liam bailey is a reflective and introspective moment on the album, with stunning keys that sprinkle the track with emotive melodies and emphatic singing from liam over a fast-paced groove. “guiding star” featuring reek0 is reminiscent of the current london and new york hip-hop scenes, with a gorgeous vocal flip and a reflective verse that animates the beautiful beat. it’s the perfect way to close out an energetic and joyful album.
