a few thoughts: this album is my first introduction to the talented artist, recommended to me by a friend. herzsprung is gb’s third studio album, and its a vibrant, sprawling body of work with incredible guitar-driven compositions that feel intimate yet sonically expansive. the upbeat groove of “adrenaline” sets the tone for the rest of the album, with colourful rhythms and expressive and introspective lyrics capturing gb’s poetic lyricism. the fast-paced drumming on “if only you’re still around” is infectious, while the incredible groove with the subtle strings on “the next day” make it one of my favourites on the album. the gentle, jazzy ballad of “starsound” is an emotive and beautiful moment, as gb’s soothing voice and reflective lyrics are wonderful to absorb. “belly” is another stunning moment, with an incredible guitar melodies that feel more melancholic in tone and energy, as the infectious drumming is utterly mesmerising throughout. the acoustic-led duet with alba akvkama on “pipe dream” is just so beautiful, while the subtle and subdued energy of “era” is a gentle, jazzy and adventurous masterpiece. the piano-led “small gods” is mellow and reflective in energy. gb’s voice is just stunning, and complemented by delicate saxophone melodies makes it an emotive, wonderful listen. “shit river” is a riveting, powerful moment. the 7-minute masterpiece has these warm guitar leads and reflective vocals. the track explodes into life the second half, with grungy guitar leads that feel overpowering and emphatic throughout. the gentle and delicate “katie magic true” closes the album out with a gentle, reflective tone. herzsprung is an incredible body of work that captures an intimacy and level of sonic detail that is utterly mesmerising from start to finish.
