a few thoughts: oliver palfreyman has been one of my favourite producers for about a decade now. his versatility as a producer and knack for experimentation make him an ever-exciting presence within the ever-evolving electronic scene in london and beyond. ooo is his first official release since his 2024 album double vision. it is an expressive, textured and utterly hypnotic project from start to finish, with a mixture of soothing and ambiance and punchy, beat-driven compositions that are dynamic and expressive. the synth-led ambient piece “skewed” is a beautiful and meditative opener to the album, combining distorted and echo-heavy synth leads with an ominous energy that feels unsettling yet oddly warm. i played “pulse” twice on first listen. it’s my favourite moment on the album, with a jittery, angsty beat complementing this smooth synth melody, and a vocal sample intertwined within this incredible sonic collage. the drum & bass groove of “i wanna waste time” is utterly infectious, with an atmospheric energy that is gorgeous and colourful throughout. “junk” is incredible too, with a lush and emotive rhythm to it. “playing games” with tyson has this tribal, dance-centric energy to it, whilst the lush, atmospheric and angelic ambience of “sink” featuring g9 luv is powerful and moving. the hypnotic, bass-heavy beat of “could be” is another incredible moment on the album, whilst the angelic vocals on “embrace” are just perfect. “maximum” closes the album out with a restless composition, combining atmospheric synth melodies with high-tempo drumming and a colourful soundscape that creates an almost explosive conclusion to the album. ooo is another exceptional record from one of the most talented producers working today.
