a few thoughts: an important member of the burgeoning experimental electronic and hip-hop scene, wilf merson has carved his own lane with introspective lyricism and abrasive, off-kilter production, both of which he brings in abundance on his album amongst the fjord. the 10-track project features some pretty wild production. from the dark and gloomy self-titled opener to the atmospheric trip-hop influence on the closer “autumn’s march”, the talented artist meanders between soundscapes with piercing rhymes. “speculate” and “hesitate” feature the gorgeous vocals of eva scott, evoking a soulful and gentle energy, contrasting the disorienting production. “the garden” is a highlight for me, with a jagged, disorienting beat that bursts into life, with a dynamic and punchy beat that just hits so hard. the minimalist “bullletproof” is another ogreat moment, while the colourful and jazzy undertones of “dogerland” is another fantastic moment on the album, as wilf flows effortlessly over the colourful beat. amongst the fjord is a fantastic project highlighting wilf merson’s talents as a producer and wordsmith, with introspective and relatable rhymes about life in all its shades.
