a few thoughts: fabiano do nascimento has been serenading us with his guitar for a few years now. his 2024 album the room with sam gendel is a highlight in his expansive and utterly mesmeric discography, and this time around he has brought vittor santos and his sixteen-piece orchestra to animate his vast, rich and textured world. vila is a raw and stunning body of work, with incredible acoustic guitar-led compositions that feel intimate, warm and playful, representing his country joyously. “o tempo (foi o meu mestre)” has swirling, uplifting guitar leads, subtle drumming, beautiful vocals and a lush orchestral composition that sets the tone for the rest of the album perfectly. the sombre and reflective “spring theme” is so moving, while the rhythmic and dynamic “tema em harmônicos” is a powerful moment on the album. “uirapurú” and “trezinho imaginário” are energetic moments, while the slow and moody “valsa” and the rhythmic “floresta dos sonhos” offer contrasting energies that have the empowering and gorgeous orchestral compositions as the common thread between the tracks. the expressive “plateau” is incredible,a bouncy, dyamic and groovy cut off the album. “prelude 5” is emphatic, while “vittor e fabi” is a solemn but beautiful moment on the album, with its strings feeling empowering and lush throughout. “tema em harmônicos (no strings)” closes the album out with a stringless version of the track, an upbeat and reflective moment that is a fitting closer to an immersive and gorgeous body of work. vila is a beautiful, melodic, moody, expressive and special album, combining fabiano’s incredible guitar melodies with string compositions that are just utterly mesmerising throughout.
