a few thoughts: great art takes time. 5 years since her incredible debut album life works out…usually, and with a few singles and an ep in between, the talented singer and songwriter is back with an incredible new project titled deep dive. the 8-track 25 minute album combines groovy electronica (on tracks such as “closer”), with a rhythmic and dynamic beat and lush vocals, broken beat gorgeousness on “steppers”, and lush, ethereal vocal moments on tracks like “bliss”. the energy on “don’t play the fool” is infectious, while the drumming and grooves on “thank you” featuring yukimi from little dragon make for another immersive moment on the album. lyrically, demae touches on themes of love, womanhood, dreams of personal and collective liberation. it’s a personal and vulnerable body of work that flows effortlessly from start to finish, and also shows demae’s versatility as an artist. “light” closes the album out with a dreamy, guitar-led piece and her soft and sensual vocals piercing through the bubbly instrumental. it’s a warm body of work, one that is emotive and beautiful and so revealing and vulnerable, and a testament to demae’s talents as a writer and vocalist.
