a few thoughts: demae’s been one of my favourite singers since the release of her excellent 2020 project life works out… usually. her music is soulful, sensual and vulnerable, as she navigates topics of womanhood, love and self-discovery. deliver me is her new project, a short 6-track ep that showcases her talents as a songwriter and vocalist, as her emotive, soothing and delicate voice sweetens the groovy, atmospheric and infectious energy of the production throughout. devin morisson, ahwlee, rog, mndsgn, aaron paris and beat butcha all helped shape the rich soundscapes throughout. the angelic opener “regret” is smooth and emotive, as her voice shines through over subtle piano melodies and strings. “bloody bouquets” is a groovy and funky track, with incredible basslines that make this an infectious listen. the grooves of “speechless (interlude)” and rich grooves of “speechless” are so good, with synths and basslines that complement each other perfectly, as well as playful vocal melodies throughout. “get ur own way” is beautiful, with incredible piano leads, groovy basslines and drumming that make this such a funky track, as demae champions trusting ur gut and just going with it. “deliver me” is a soothing, slow-paced but emotive closer, with angelic synths and strings that complement the subtle grooves of the beat. it’s a delicate track with studding vocals from demae, as her introspections about life and her dreams make for a reflective listen, all over a gorgeously produced beat. demae has exceeded expectations with deliver me. it’s an introspective, reflective and poignant body of work that really showcases her ability to convey personal and vulnerable messages of self-love, over gorgeous and textured production, and with a voice that is incredibly smooth and sensual.
