The Polaris prize-winning Montreal-based artist Backxwash is back to shock and completely overwhelm, with her first project since I LIE HERE BURIED WITH MY RINGS AND MY DRESSES. The hip-hop artist is known for her abrasive, industrial and horrorcore sound and delivery, and with this new album, titled HIS HAPPINESS SHALL COME FIRST EVEN THOUGH WE ARE SUFFERING, she has reached new creative heights, with a dynamic, abrasive and intricate album, cohesive in its themes and eclectic in its sound.
From the lively and expansive opener “VIBANDA” featuring Morgan-Paige & Michael Go, to the surprisingly mellow and soulful “MUKAZI”, the album jumps from sound to sound effortless, allowing Backxwash to flow over these experimental beats, rapping about regrets throughout adolescent years and childhood, driven by trauma and experiences that have shaped her state of mind today. Her passion is felt throughout every release, and tracks like “JUJU” featuring Ghais Guevara & Michael Go (a definite highlight on the album), channel this anger, grief, frustration so poignantly. Another thing to note is how diverse and eclectic the instrumentals are. Produced by Backxwash herself, they are textured and incredibly lively, capturing her energy on the mic perfectly while also delivering quite an emphatic and overwhelming overall experience.
