The vibrant and engaging footwork of DJ Hank’s City Stars EP makes it quite an engaging sonic experience

Chicago’s electronic music scene has a rich history of trailblazers and legends. DJ Hank is slowly getting there. Through punchy, vibrant footwork, the talented musician is able to create these jittery, engaging and intricately composed beats and compositions that are just so good. His new project, City Stars EP, is exemplary of this. Thoughout the 6 tracks on this album, he’s able to create this dynamic, colourful soundscape that is perfect for the dancefloor.

The grooves and jittery, almost jumpy synths and beat of “Lift Gate” sets the tone perfectly for the project. His compositions are sharp, and each track flows effortlessly from track to track. The vocal sample on “Stay” perfectly complements the rumbling and chopped beat. “Get @ Me” loops these infectious vocals with a rumbling bassline, and colourful dynamic synth leads, capturing this dynamic, restless sound that continues to permeate throughout the track and the rest of the project. “Air Ride” is another great track, while the tribal, raw aesthetic on “Kiosko” is also pretty exceptional. The project closes with “Mkwa”, another engaging track mixing a soulful vocal loop and synth leads that are emit a vibrant tone that, with its swirling synths, make it a fantastic way to close the project out.

DJ Hank combines incredible vocal loops with intricate beat arrangements that perfectly capture the aesthetic and aura of the Chicago electronic and footwork scene. It’s a fantastic body of work, and one you should all support and check out! Released via Hyperdub Records.
