Music: Kikuo – Kikuo Miku 6

Japanese producer Kikuo comes through with a brand new record titled Kikuo Miku 6. This is the first time I’ve heard of the talented electronic producer, but their colourful, textured and mesmeric take on the genre is what makes this album click for me.

With engaging melodies and a textured soundscape, this is a colourful, magical and eclectic project. “あなぐらぐらし / Hole Dwelling” kicks the album off with off-kilter synths and subtle vocals throughout that are brilliantly complemented by driving beats, synths and ethereal synths throughout. “バツ猫 / XxX Cat” is a colourful and quirky track with pitched up vocals and a playful rhythm. “とんねる大冒険 / Tunnel Adventure” is an adventurous track with more playful rhythms throughout. The densely produced “昨日はすべて返される / Yesterday, Everything Returns” is excellent too, with off kilter electronic effects and samples that add to the weird, quirky nature of the tape. “舞台性ナニカ (Vocaloid ver.) / Histrionic” is another highlight, with drumming, synths and stunning vocals throughout that just bring out such personality to the project. Overall, this album showcases Kikuo’s unique sound, and amplifies it to pretty spectacular proportions.
