Saul is a new duo comprising of Barney Whittaker (Footshooter) and Jack Stephenson-Oliver (Vels Trio / Poppy Ajudha / Charlotte dos Santos). They have come through with a brand new project titled Murmurations, and it’s an excellent soulful dance EP with some incredible grooves and compositions.
The 6 tracks on this project span 27 minutes, and bring heaps of energy and good-feel vibes. The introspection Brother Portrait brings on “No Fuss No Fight” is stellar as usual, with a soulful synth-heavy compositions, with groovy basslines and an infectious beat throughout that’s just so infectious. The fantastic keys throughout “Ping Pong” are infectious, as the synths and beat provide another incredible rhythm. The synth and key heavy “Interlude” gives way to the stunningly soulful “Earth & Rain” with Poppy Ajudha, who’s vocals throughout add texture and beauty throughout the track. “Shitbird” is a drum and bass-inspired track with a high energy breakbeats and delicate synths and keys throughout. “Slow Man” is an excellent, key-heavy composition, with wonky basslines at times and a wildly infectious groove that gets me grooving. Overall, Murmurations is a terrific project that brings soul, funk, jazz and brokenbeat electronic music that is incredibly engaging and fun to listen to. A definite highlight for me this year.
