Detroit electronic music legend SHIGETO comes through with a brand new EP titled Versions. It sees him delve into the world of jazz music, and it’s an incredibly captivating release, with emphatic saxophone and trumpet leads throughout that are coupled by gorgeous keys and brilliant drumming.
“Back to Basics” starts off with a beautiful, ethereal sound, with angelic keys, energetic sax and drumming that later make way for a smooth and soulful melody and rhythm. “MCW” similarly has beautiful keys and a frantic, dance-heavy vibe that changes tempo throughout, being met by slow-paced emotive saxophone and key arrangements. “Divine Family” is an 8-minute cosmic beauty, with an angelic and meditative sound that is dominated by a vocal sample and a synth-heavy melody that floats throughout the track. “River Bank Drive” is a smooth and wonderfully composed track, with colourful keys and saxophone leads that bring beauty and lightness to the tone and aura of the project. It’s a great way to end this short but beautiful EP, and I really hope SHIGETO makes more jazz music like this in the future because it’s excellent.
