Singaporean-native W. Y. Huang comes through with an intense electronic album titled Crossing The Great Water 利涉大川. This is my first introduction to the artist, and I’m immediately drawn to the eclectic nature of the music and the eerie tone he is able to create. As he states himself, “I set out to create a vision of the future through a spiritual Asian lens; a vision not bound by Western identity politics or orientalist fantasy, but one that is rooted in an ancient, enduring philosophy.”
Heavily inspired by Taoist ritual music in Singapore, the talented musician is able to craft a short project that is intense with synth-laden rhythms and quirky electronic effects that are complemented by deep, dubstep-inspired basslines and beats. “Mercy {开光}” and “临 {19} (Becoming Great)” especially, have harder-hitting beats with vocals from himself. “Vision From The Depths” features singer Meuko! Meuko! who provides angelic vocals over a subtle dub-laden instrumental. The tone of this track as well as “Intoxicated {48} (The Well)” and “Translate” are much slower in pace as they show much a more emotive side, something reminiscent of James Blake’s work earlier this decade.
W. Y. Huang impresses with Crossing The Great Water 利涉大川 and it would be interesting to hear where he goes from here. Listen to the album below via Bandcamp and don’t forget to support! Released via Twin Records.
