Fumaça Preta are a Latin psych/rock/garage/electronic/experimental eclectic band that have completely blown me away with their third studio album titled Pepas. Surprisingly for me, this is the first time I’m hearing of this group, who bring ridiculous amounts of energy to their music, with wild guitar rhythms and explosive moments that make this record an incredibly dense one and an impactful listening experience.
The energy on “Aquí Abajo” is an example of this, with fast-paced drumming and a bassline that is completely overpowering and overwhelming. “Piña Colada” is a near eight-minute trip into a world of Latin, psychedelic madness, with dominant and emotive singing and a change in tempo that just keeps you on edge. “El Mismo Abismo” represents a slower and jazzier tone to the record that is eerie and unsettling. It gives way to an explosive ending with “Arepa de Chicharrón,” which starts where the previous track left off, a slower tempo jazz-infused rhythm that quickly bursts into flames with electrifying guitar leads that simply explode until the last second. A truly powerful ending to an impressive album.
