Music: Low Leaf – PRiMiTiVA

Low Leaf’s spiritual and earthly aura translates beautifully throughout her work. Having followed her growth for years now, it is amazing how much she has blossomed as an artist. PRiMiTiVA is her new project, a 6 track EP that includes some of the most complex, layered and musically enriching compositions I’ve heard this year.

It starts off with the gorgeous, tribal and harp-heavy “Aqueous Earth,” a track that features incredible drumming, angelic vocals from Low Leaf, soulful and mesmeric as well as organic instrumentation that is just so incredibly lush that it gives me an instant deep, emotional connection with the music. There are times throughout this project where I’m genuinely stunned and blown away by the masterful and genuinely flawless experimental compositions. “Voice” is my favourite track on the album, with Low Leaf’s gorgeous and soulful voice being complemented by darker electronic production, hypnotic harps and a groovy bassline that gets you moving. There are subtle horns in the background that further provide depth and a spiritual tone to the track. Complex compositions that incorporate a plethora of sounds and instrumentation continue throughout PRiMiTiVA, building and progressing throughout. “Journey To GiGA GAiA” is an example of this, with it’s driving beat that builds with subtle guitar leads, angelic vocals and synths that elevate the track further to an electrifying ending.

This EP completely blew me away. From the harp-led instrumentation, I hear clear parallels, not only in sound but in overall aura and emotional impact to Alice Coltrane’s Journey in Satchidananda. It is a truly mesmerising listening experience, and I recommend this to anyone. A beautiful body of work. Thank you Low Leaf!
