*2018 Album of the Year*
With Everything’s Fine, Jean Grae and Quelle Chris’ new collaborative album, the two newly engaged rappers go completely left-field creatively with an off-beat, satirical masterpiece that is soulful, freaky and funky in sound, while its lyrical density also shines through. The contrast in tone between Quelle Chris’ laid back, monotonous and sarcastic voice is countered with Jean Grae’s quirky, intricate wordplay that still mesmerises me to this day. Everything’s Fine provides a dystopian view of what it means to be ‘fine’ today. Lyrically there is a lot to unpack, which makes it an engaging and fascinating listen.
The album is feature heavy, with the likes of Your Old Droog, Denmark Vessey, Big Tone, Anna Wise and even comedians Hannibal Buress and Nick Offerman contributing their talents to this project. It is a charismatic, idiosyncratic and an intelligently crafted project that combines the talents of two of the most unique and underrated emcees in recent years. It will take me a couple more listens to fully grasp the concepts and ideas captured on this project, but it’s the intricate lyricism and sonic diversity that makes this a fascinating listen.
