Music: Sons of Kemet – Your Queen Is A Reptile

*2018 Album of the Year*

Shabaka Hutchings’ talent and musical vision stands at the forefront on the jazz scene in London- vibrant, experimental, spiritual and technically flawless. As the bandleader of Sons of Kemet, he has created a densely rich and textured sound which encapsulates the history of African culture beautifully. Their LP Your Queen Is a Reptile is a celebration of rich and deeply spiritual jazz as well vibrant and psychedelic Afrobeat that is both futuristic and musically wild. The album is also celebration of influential, powerful and beautiful black women throughout history – Ada Eastman (Shabaka’s own grandmother), Mamie Phipps Clark, Harriet Tubman, Anna Julia Cooper, Angela Davis, Nanny Of The Maroons, Yaa Asantewaa, Albertina Sisulu and Doreen Lawrence.

Each track provides a different tone, pace and rhythm, which makes it an exciting, intricate listen. Yo can stream Sons of Kemet’s new LP Your Queen Is a Reptile below via Spotify. Make sure to support the group by purchasing their music. Released on the legendary Impulse! Records.
