In terms of compositions, sounds, grooves and melodies producers look to sample, no album or soundtrack has really attained a cult level within the genre as Alain Goraguer’s impeccable soundtrack for the 1973 classic animated feature film Fantastic Planet. The film’s score has been sampled by the likes of Madlib, J Dilla and DJ Shadow, and is a landmark in experimental film music. Alain’s eerie, piano-driven soundtrack is perfect for moody instrumentals, one which keep you on the edge of your seat. Tracks like “Ten Et Tiwa Dorment” have become iconic records for sampling, and the album as a whole follows a specific tone and vibe that is entirely unique to any other soundtrack composed for a film.
Madlib sampled the track “Le Bracelet” for his 2000 classic Quasimoto album The Unseen, more specifically the track “Come on Feet.” With the flute lead, piano keys, the sinister tone of the sample and funky basslines, it is a perfect fit for a Madlib sample, which is chopped and sampled with the addition of subtle drumming and Quas lyrics.
