Dabrye’s influence on hip-hop cannot be disputed. A legend in the game, the producer from Ann Arbour, Michigan has been making music for decades- his first studio album One/Three coming out in 2001, and he was released 5 critically acclaimed albums since then, including his most recent effort, Three/Three.
The follow-up to the rich and important 2006 album Two/Three is full of incredible features including the likes of Ghostface Killah, MF DOOM, Roc Marciano, Quelle Chris, Danny Brown, Jonwayne and Denmark Vessey. It’s also a celebration of Detroit-area artists, with musicians like Shigeto and Phat Kat also making an appearance. There are hard-hitting cuts such as ‘Stranded’ (featuring Fatt Father) and ‘Bubble Up’ (featuring Phat Kat aka Ronnie Euro) as well as jazzier cuts such as ‘Pretty’ (featuring Jonwayne) and ‘Nova’ (featuring Nolan The Ninja). This album highlights Dabrye’s eclectic diversity in production, using hard-hitting drum samples, silky synth-leads and smooth basslines throughout the album, with each guest feature providing their own vibe and talent to the table. It is a truly dense listening experience that requires attention as well as excellent quality speakers or headphones.
