a few thoughts: holy tongue consists of al wootton, valentina magaletti (moin, vanishing twin, v/z), and susumu mukai (zongamin, vanishing twin, v/z). collectively, they’ve been experimenting with vast, psychedelic, dub-infused soundscapes for a few years, and basilikum is their new offering: an 8-track journey into hypnotic, tribal compositions that mesmerise from start to finish. from the brief but animated “i’ve stood in this room for a long time before” to the heavy and meandering eeriness of “nature”, the album journeys through thrilling drum-led compositions, with a restlessness and energy to it that is infectious from start to finish. “coca” features vocalist dali de saint paul, with a menacing, dub-like quality that is just thrilling from start to finish. the infectious, constant bassline on “orange 28” gives it an undeniable groove to it, with synth and flute melodies that feel entrancing and spiritual. the off-kilter and haunting “bloom in d minor” featuring dali de saint paul is fantastic as well, with heavy drumming and eclectic synth leads that feel restless. the pummeling energy of “vuoto 25” is utterly entrancing from start to finish. it’s pretty much a dub-infused techno track, and it slaps. the brief, piano-led interlude of “roseroot” gives way to “single~eyed”, another drum-heavy track that unfolds and blossoms into a cacophont of different sounds, creating a soothing, hypnotic and guitar-led piece that feels warm and inviting, which flows effortlessly into the closer “nature”, a frantic and heady track that captures the urgency and energy of their music perfectly. basilikum is a dense and textured body of work, with a cinematic and restless quality to it that is just incredible from start to finish.
