a few thoughts: parisian producer simo cell has been at the forefront of some of the most innovative and experimental music to come out recently. he’s teamed up with egyptian poet and producer abdullah miniawy on a disorienting, dubby, and fierce album dying is the internet. it’s a psychedelic, overwhelming listen, as simo cell crafts bass-heavy dance music for abdullah miniawy to bring engaging vocals in arabic that melt into the sonic textures throughout the album. the opener “i see the stadium”, featuring an intense spoken word piece from lord spikeheart, sets the tone and energy for the rest of the album. thick basslines, unsettling tones and textures, and an explosive beat that comes in halfway through that elevates the track to new heights. a perfect track geared for the dancefloor, and that’s just the start. the wailing vocal delivery from abdullah complements the twisted production. the rumbling, bass-led energy of “pixelated” is heavy and intense, while the dub, psychedelic and animated “reels in 360” is a highlight on the album. its brass-led instrumentation and synths make for a hypnotic listen. the subdued and more ambient tone of “tear chime” is the perfect antidote to the high energy of the previous tracks. “the dala effect” combines a hypnotic groove with some glitchy effects and beautiful vocals from abdullah. the vocals on “living emojis” are absolutely stunning, with thumping bass-heavy drums. the horns on “travelling in bcc” are absolutely haunting, with jittery and restless groove that is intense throughout. it’s a mesmeric moment that feels otherworldly. “easing the hearts” closes the album out with another glitchy, restless energy, with dynamic grooves that are hypnotic, and close the album out with a bang. dying is the internet feels sonically dystopian, with eerie and experimental soundscapes crafted by simo cell that complement abdullah miniawy’s urgent delivery.
