a few thoughts: kiss facility comprises of emirati / egyptian singer mayah alkhateri and producer salvador navarette (aka sega bodega). khazna (‘treasure’ in arabic’) in is their debut album, an upbeat, rhythmic and inspiring rock album, containing clear shoegazey influences as well as arabic vocals that touch on issues of mental health and longing for belonging and connection amongst other poetic and vulnerable moments. there is a warm, inviting tone to the album, brought by smooth and textured compositions, often playful. the opener “lynch” and the catchy grooves of “ishara” featuring aleyna tilki and “plasma” capture that tone perfectly, while the evocative “cheap poetry” is another moving moment, capturing the beauty of their sound. the electronic-driven composition of “absent from my eyes” has meandering vocals and a dynamic beat to it, while “kotshena” has an urgency to it, with an arabic-influenced composition, making it a standout for me. it’s a catchy and dynamic cut too, and one that’s more geared to the dancefloor. “magenta”, with its wailing guitar leads and gorgeous vocals, is another fantastic track, while “flux” closes the album out with another upbeat, restless cut, with emphatic vocals and a smooth composition that is just incredibly poignant from start to finish. khazna is an emotive and utterly hypnotic listen. a catchy yet innovative body of work that captures the beauty of both artists’ artistry.
