a few thoughts: italian composer caterina barbieri and norwegian saxophonist bendik giske have released a stunning, mesmeric 4-track album titled at source. combining soothing electronic compositions with dazzling saxophone melodies, the two artists have created a moving, transcendent body of work that captures a beautiful and uplifting energy that is just incredible from start to finish. from the restless and jittery opener of “intuition, nimbus”, with its overwhelming synth leads and electronic composition, to the stunning, beautifully melodic closer of “persistence, buds”, the album feels warm and inviting, a lush, spirited and arresting project that is genuinely flawless from start to finish. the groove and beat of “alignments, orbit” is dynamic and frantic in energy, as the saxophone composition floats over the restless electronic groove. “impatience, magma” is another hypnotic track, with loud and overpowering synth melodies and expressive saxophone leads that complement and simultaneously contrast the urgency of the electronic composition throughout the track. it’s an utterly hypnotic, spellbinding project that combines the talents of two masters of their craft. at source is a profound sonic meditation.
