a few thoughts: neue grafik has been an integral part of the independent electronic / dance and jazz scene in london over the last decade or so. having released some fantastic projects like foulden road and innervision, the talented producer has been ble to capture the soul and energy of the city poignantly and beautifully. he is back with a new album titled rachael, a dynamic 10-track album featuring some incredible house music and electronic compositions that are punchy and soulful in equal measure. “rachael pt. i” opens the album with a gorgeous string-led composition, making way for the tribal and emphatic energy of “narcissus 909”. the acid house of “voight kampff 808” is incredible, with its emphatic drumming and synth melodies throughout. “bold” is an atmospheric, immersive cut featuring gentle and sensual vocals from jerome thomas. the broken-beat of “1200 prophecy” and “rachael pt. 2” are infectious, while the subdued, beautiful energy of “romantic chlamydia” is another standout moment. the horns and frantic jazz of “childhood memories” is one of my favourites on the album, with rich, textured and cascading compositions that make for an emotive and memorable listen. “lullaby for crackheads” is a smooth and groovy cut on the album, while the reflective and grandiose string-led piece of “rise of a.” closes the album out with a delicate, hypnotic piece. neue grafik’s rachael is a poignant and powerful representation of london’s vibrant and ever-evolving electronic and jazz scene.
