a few thoughts: london-based pedal steel player joe harvey white has teamed up with multi-instrumentalist geir sundstøl on a hypnotic and mesmerising new album titled langeleik. with immersive, spellbinding compositions that combine stunning pedal steel melodies, subtle drumming and a captivating energy, the two talented artists are able to convey a gentleness and beauty to their sound that is utterly soothing from start to finish. from the atmospheric and colourful opener “tana”, featuring anders engen and erland dahlen to the gentle and reflective “der elvene møtes”, the soundscapes evoke feelings of atmospheric beauty and nostalgia, aided by their cohesive sound and seamless chemistry. “ribbles” is a clear standout for me, with its meandering melodies that create an intimate and moving sound, capturing the beauty and essence of their music and collaboration poignantly. “tista lengter” featuring jo berger myhre is another immersive and arresting listen, with a rumbling bassline that complements the angelic composition throughout, while “bleikstranda” is another gorgeous and immersive moment. the ambiance of this album is just gorgeous, with textured compositions that make me want to sink into their vast and immersive sonic world. joe harvey-whyte and geir sundstøl have released a masterpiece with langeleik.
