the week between the 27th october – 31st october 2025 will be a celebration of a band that i’ve been kinda obsessed with since discovering them a few months ago. formed by two anonymous brothers in san francisco, usa, back in 2008 (also recording in beirut, lebanon), mamaleek have been creating some of the most intense metal music, often jazzy, ambient, prog-rock or psychedelic rock influenced. 8 albums in, the obscure band have become one of the most expansive, daring bands out there, continuously refining yet expanding their sound, exploring new sonic landscapes through different genres and energies. excited to delve into their incredible discography! next up, their short but sweet 3-track EP cadejos.
released: august 9, 2019
genre: black metal / experimental / desert rock
from: san francisco, usa
label: the flenser
a few thoughts: this short, 3-track ep is an atmospheric body of work with desert rock influences throughout. straightforward and punchy, this is a nice little addition to their discography. the wailing guitars on “katsina” make it a meditative cut on the album, as the band are still incorporating a lot of their arabic influences within their music. the slow-paced, atmospheric energy on this track makes it perfect for a journey across a desert, which is the energy the album cover gives off, as well as the poem they’ve written alongside the album (via their bandcamp page). “cadejo negro” has disorienting guitar grooves, a sludgy energy brought by the guitar leads and muffled singing. the intense and rhythmic drumming on “cadego blanco” is riveting, with its rumbling, unsettling energy. three excellent tacks indeed, and ones that could have easily been a part of their last few albums.
