a few thoughts: multi-disciplinary artist duval timothy has been making some of my favourite music in recent years. albums such as sen am and help have been integral to my overall sonic experience of my time here in london. through the piano, he’s able to create astonishingly beautiful and captivating compositions that transcend time and place. i always feel so present listening to his music, every note, every breath. wishful thinking is just a continuation of that. an intimate portrayal of his state of mind, he’s able to paint colourful moods through joyful, introspective and playful melodies and soundscapes that capture this raw, magical energy. the sound of street life kicks the first track “road” off, with a beautiful piano melody accompanied by thick basslines that create this riveting, almost angry energy, but contrasted by the delicate piano and guitar melodies that intertwine with it. the groovy “big flex” is a disorienting track with its reversed piano melody, but with colour and lightness as well that carries a lot of beauty. “long life” is a gorgeous sonic journey, with piano melodies and electronic effects that create a playful and lively rhythm. the dynamic and familiar rhythm of “stock” is accompanied by light guitar melodies that add to the uplifting energy of the album. the grandoise synths and guitar leads of “cement” make it a lively, dynamic track, while the emphatic piano melody on “bloom” is just incredible. and the album just grows and blossoms from there on. from the wind instrumentation on the light and gorgeous “dad” to the bright “snow”, the album is full of dynamic, colourful and emotive moments. the trumpet melody on “grass” is pretty, the “awwwww” sounds like its title. “sleep” is this sublime hypnotic composition with piano melodies intertwining with one another, while the grand, echoey keys on “young chemical” are emphatic. the gorgeous piano-led composition and plucked strings on “promise” are gorgeous, while “magic” is this emotive, reflective piano-led piece with the backdrop of conversations and every day life, a reflection on home and its preciousness. “vera” has this subdued, quiet energy, while the acoustic closer “flurry” with its incredible melody and earthly tones, makes it such a stunning and memorable way to end this sonic journey. wishful thinking is truly an incredible body of work that captures duval timothy’s artistry and talents so poignantly and beautifully.
