a few thoughts: actress has been at the forefront of some of the most innovative electronic music released in the last decade or two. so it comes as no surprise that he’d be collaborating with none other than legendary synth maestro, suzanne ciani. concrète waves is an improvised piece recorded both at the barbican in london and the sonar festival in barcelona. it’s a creative, musical conversation between two avant-garde pioneers, and the results are impressive, to say the least. broken down into 4 main sections, “concrète waves london a1-a5”, “concrète waves london b1-b5”, “concrète waves barcelona a1-a7” and “concrète waves barcelona b1-b4”. each section has a specific vibe and tone, but it’s the moody, ethereal key and synth compositions along with the grooves and beats that range from more ambient to more techno-focused. the soundscapes throughout are smooth, emotive and incredibly atmospheric. walking around windy and gloomy london yesterday with this as the soundtrack was absolutely perfect, especially “concrète waves london b1-b5”, with its moody piano-driven compositions and slow-paced, hypnotic beats. it’s a beautiful, melodic and powerful body of work from two titans who are continuously experimenting and expanding their respective sounds.
