a few thoughts: i discovered talented emcee bxks from her feature on lex amor’s forward ever album that came out in 2024, but she’s been doing it long before my ears caught onto her incredibly dense and varied sound. fear of eclipse is her new 11-track, 20-minute project. while it’s short, it does so much, and captures her energy and skills as a poignant and effective storyteller, whilst telling her story on some punchy and infectious production (producers include rambo, saionthebeat, .fullstopnathan. and el londo). the intricate and atmospheric “i’m that” sets the tone of the album, as bxks reflects on her path and growth, on a smooth yet jittery and impactful beat. the crazy beat on “flashing lights”, makes it a clear highlight or me, with its string and synth melody and moody and broken-beat instrumental that is just incredible from start to finish. the short and eerie dark “marga skit” leads to the upbeat, dancehall-inspired “zagga dat”, as she flows effortlessly over the unassuming energy of the beat. “45” and “touch on me” featuring brazy draw from gqom influences, and is a dynamic cut on the album. the high-paced energy “init gyal” and “sing4me” are two sexy tracks that bring the energy, while the dancehall energy of “vixin” featuring zeddy east is another great moment on the album, while the fast-paced, drill-influenced groove of “handout” is a fantastic too. the dizzie rascal sampling “still sittin’ here” brings a final moment of reflection on the current state of hip-hop, male rappers and her journey. it’s a fantastic body of work, and one that continues to show why bxks is one of the most exciting new voices in the uk hip-hop scene.
