a few thoughts: what a first film to watch in the cinema this year, for me. marty supreme, directed by the josh safdie, is a relentless, riveting and poignant film about, as people have described it, being an idiot in your twenties. in usual safdie fashion, the film is set for the most part in new york, with cinematography that captures this autumnal energy, yet with a non-stop action-filled moments that are just transfixing. it reminded me of my experience watching one battle after another. the “what the fuck is gonna happen next” feeling that for the most part, kept me on the edge of my seat. timothée chalamet is absolutely fantastic as marty mauser, a 23-year-old aspiring table tennis world champion, a hustler who often acts selfishly and without regard for others, making him a morally questionable character. i did, however, find myself shedding a tear over the ending, proving how profound the character is, as well as how much i connected to him. the safdie brothers always bring interesting people to their projects, and marty supreme was no different. businessman kevin o’leary was in the film, portraying, i can only imagine, a version of himself, and he is terrific. tyler okonma (aka tyler, the creator) is in as a supporting actor and really impressed, while both gwynyeth paltrow and odessa a’zion give commendable performances as well. there is so much nuance in a lot of these characters. the film deserves multiple rewatches to really get a sense of the types of relationships that exist between each character. i can’t fault the storyline at all, it is a near flawless film to me, and daniel lopatin’s soundtrack is excellent as well. the synth-heavy compositions feel very 80s, and fit with the nostalgic, old-school tone and energy to it. there is an unnerving energy throughout the soundtrack that really reflects the tone and pace of the film. early contender for fav film watched this year.
