a few thoughts: human error club comprises of diego gaeta (on keys), jesse justice (on keys), and mekala session (on drums). they’ve been on my radar recently, namely for producing the closing track “dislocated” on billy woods’ last album golliwog. i was therefore intrigued to hear more music from the group. and here we are. human error club at kenny’s house is a collaborative project with producer extroardinare, kenny segal. the 14-track project features some incredible moments, as the both human error club and kenny segal create invigorating, meandering soundscapes that combine infectious beats with introspective rhymes from the array of features on the album, including the likes of quelle chris, cavalier, shabaka, k-the-i???, billy woods, elucid, pink siifu, ryan crosby and jon gk. tracks like “not hecn around” and “turning complete” have heavy drum arrangements, with riveting jazzy compositions that capture the energy of their effortlessly. “ooo what’s that” has quirky synth leads, while quelle chris and cavalier provide colourful and cartoonish lyrics, making it an early standout on the album. shabaka’s flute and wind instrumentation on “frogtown” is beautiful, while elucid’s usually disorienting yet relatable lyrics on “night time” are exceptional – “sometimes there’s nothing hiding in the underlinings / we just all ran out of time on all your wonder whyness’s” is such a poignant and relatable piece of writing, as is a reminder of how good he is painting visceral images of his state of mind and being. the angelic, key-driven “jocelyn” is just sublime, while k-the-i???’s urgency on “dragoncurve” is arresting and manic, while the jazzy energy on “orange tree” is another beautifully produced moment on the album, with incredible keys and drumming that swirl and dance throughout the track. “the center” with moor mother and billy woods is another highlight on the album, with a sprawling drum and synth-led composition that help both features paint their stories. the intense “lights on at the club” featuring jon gk makes it a perfect way to close out the album. intense drumming, gorgeous string compositions, beautiful keys throughout, human error club and kenny segal have crafted a rich body of work with so many gorgeous instrumental pieces that capture the personality of their artistry perfectly. human error club at kenny’s house is a fantastic album and a perfect introduction to human error club’s growing and evolving sound.
