a few thoughts: with dark, gloomy undertones, yet with a vibrant and emotive energy, mark williams lewis’ music has been deeply relatable to me, as well as being incredibly raw and vulnerable. the guitar-centric leads, harmonica melodies, drumming and mark’s baritone yet smooth vocals, it’s the perfect autumnal listen. from the groovy and emphatic opener “still alone” to the moody and reflective closer “ecstatic heads”, the project is full of gorgeous, emotive and captivating moments that capture an insular, reflective energy and tone. the upbeat energy on “socialising” is stunning, while the groovy, reflective and melancholic tone of “tomorrow is perfect” is, well… pretty perfect. the guitar arpeggios of “skeletons coupling” are infectious, while the drumming and driving energy of “petals” are incredible throughout. the dark, psychedelic energy of “brain” is sublime and another highlight on the album, while the driving, infectious grooves of “spit” are also, just.. wow. thematically, mark touches on quite a few themes of love, loneliness, self discovery in the big city. the writing on the album is just exceptional and complements the gloomy, london-esque energy on the album as a whole. it’s a beautifully dark, reflective body of work, and one i’ve had on repeat (and will continue to) since it came out.
