a few thoughts: london-based jazz trio flur consists of miriam adefris on harp, isaac robertson on on saxophone and dillon harrison on percussion. together they’ve released their debut album, plunge, a stunning body of work that draws inspiration from contemporary classical and spiritual jazz, combining soft and emotive melodies with melancholic and rhythmic moments that perfectly capture their improvisational, free-flowing approach to making music. opening with “nightdiver”, the stunning harp melodies and subtle saxophone leads intertwine with intricate drumming, creating this eerie yet gorgeous composition that really sets the tone for the album. the immersive and sublime “larking” is another standout, while the rhythmic drumming on “bolete” make it one of the more dynamic cuts on the album. the rumbling energy of “hold fast old kelp” is as unsettling as it is emotive and lush, while the the drumming on “5 sep” is just beautiful. the angelic and spiritual “trimaran i.” and “trimaran ii.” are both spellbinding moments, with the healing harp melodies capturing this moving, transcendent energy. “the lighthouse” closes the album out perfectly, with a stunning meditative piece that again, feels healing in so many ways. there’s really so much to admire about plunge, it really is one of the most poignant, beautiful pieces of music i’ve listened to in a while.
