a few thoughts: valentina magaletti is one of the best drummers and percussionists in the world, and has continued her streak of incredible collaborative releases, this time with japanese producer ypy, aka koshiro ono, to create an intricate, rhythmic masterpiece titled kansai bruises. the 8-track album features some of the most intense and overwhelming drumming and percussion i’ve heard in a while, while ypy’s subtle yet adventurous production, makes for a thoroughly engaging and punchy listen. the title track is just a manic display of pure musicianship, with heavy percussive moments that jump out at you, while the quirky synth leads and electronic musings add to the organised chaos of the music. the jittery and relentless “lantern lit run” is another highlight, with heavy percussive moments and overwhelming electronic synth leads and effects that just crash down along with the intense drumming throughout. it’s just so fast-paced and relentless, i’m obsessed with the energy they’re able to create. the relatively slower-paced “interlude for fog days” is also terrific, with an emphasis on dark and desolate electronic soundscapes that complement the jumpy percussion, while also creating this moody and reflective energy to it that is just incredible. “pesto” closes the project out with jittery percussive moments and reflective electronic rhythms that capture the manic tone and vibe of their music perfectly. kansai bruises is a stellar body of work that, if there are any drum-admirers / players who want to listen to some crazy compositions, should really study this and just admire their genius.
