kokoroko – tuff times never last

released: july 11th, 2025

genre: jazz

from: london, uk

label: brownswood recordings

a few thoughts: a gorgeous, reflective body of work from one of london’s most exciting jazz artists working today. the septet, led by sheila maurice-grey, channel west african rhythms with a smooth and punchy compositions, that are gorgeous and carry an air of optimism and such beauty. favourites include the stunning opener “never lost”, “idea 5 (call my name)” featuring lulu, with gorgeous vocals and a euphoric energy to it that is light and just utterly gorgeous, “three piece suit” featuring azekel, one of my most played tracks of the year – there’s just something utterly hypnotic about this cut, and the lavish, soulful and beautiful “over/reprise”. it’s a truly breathtaking album and one of the most complete jazz albums to come out this year.
