a few thoughts: london-based rapper-poet, dj, event curator james massiah has released a new project titled bounty law, and 8-track ep that explores his feelings and state of mind living in such a suffocating and overwhelming city. with production from the likes of cajm, cold and 3o, the sonic tapestry is colourful yet punchy and direct, as james speaks on the complexities of his relationships within this city. the opener “pop down” kicks the projects off with a sombre tone, as james reflects on his state of mind with an intimate vulnerability that is just incredible, and complements the dynamic and colourful beat. the abstract lyricism and off-kilter flows on “dobermann” are wicked and the textured and vibrant beat is stellar too. he speaks on love on “later”, as he usually does within his music. it’s the way he explores his idea of love that is so poignant and relatable. the hook on “west” is infectious and catchy, while the bounce of “be there” is another fantastic track, making references to dalston and stratford as places he would be there for love. the disorienting yet subdued production on “carbine (devilish mix)” is fantastic, as james’ refects on the horror that is the current state of the world, trying to stay sane and seek joy and pleasure in the midst of chaos. “baby” is another banger, with introspections on love and welcoming new life into the world, while “peroxide” closes the project out with a dynamic, kaleidoscopic beat and james massiah’s optimistic introspections, claiming “it’s all right, anyway”, persevering through the hurricane of life. bounty law is stellar project that further showcases james’s talents as a poet and rapper.
