a few thoughts: djrum has been creating some of the most innovative and eclectic electronic compositions in years. often dark, eerie and with intense techno drumming throughout his music, he’s been able to carve out a unique sound for himself, and continues to push the boundaries of what electronic music can sound like. under tangled silence his his new full length album, an hour-long body of work that is more melodic and beautiful than anything he’s released thus far. focusing on key-led compositions and gentler rhythmic moments, the album is a gentle meditative listening experience, as djrum combines glitchy, rhythmic compositions with piano-led pieces that are just gorgeous. from the gentle, immersive and gorgeous “a tune for us” to the jittery, idiosycratic 11-minute closing composition of “sycamore”, the album is full of stunning and hypnotic moments that meander and melt seamlessly into one another. the punchy rhythms of “waxcap” are beautiful, while the heaviness and percussive energy of “l’anciene” is one of the standouts on the album. the marimba composition on “three foxes chasing each other” and the intensity of the drumming within the composition that flows and meanders between these gorgeous and tribal percussive melodies makes it such a hypnotic piece of music. the basslines of “galaxy in silence” are incredible, while the incredible fast-paced chimes on “let me” are stunning throughout. what i love about the album is the seamless marriage between slow-paced piano-led melodies that capture an real aura and beauty to the sonic world he builds, and the usual electronic rhythms, often as high-paced and intense as some of his most high-energy compositions he’s made. ultimately though, it’s the gentle nature of the piano-compositions and gorgeous melodies that make this such an impressive and gorgeous body of work.
