a few thoughts: london-based producer footshooter has been producing and releasing some of the most dynamic and impressive broken-beat tunes for years now. he’s always been collaborative in his approach to making music, inviting different voices and sonic musings to create colourful and incredibly punchy compositions. the oasis carries that same energy, with 11 tracks of some of the most infectious and groovy brokenbeat compositions i’ve heard so far this year. from the incredible jazzy opener “cycles” featuring james mollison on sax, to the joyful and ethereal “what you saw” featuring mahon & ma.moyo, there are so many moments of pure sonic bliss, where either it’s the beat taking over the groove and energy of the music, or the plethora of dynamic voices throughout. “obelisk” featuring natty wylah and brother portrait has this moody and reflective energy, with fiery verses from both emcees, who paint a picture of life in south london and how they move within a city that can be at times suffocating, reflecting on love and life, but with the comfort of it feeling like home. the thumping beat on “boomerang” featuring wilf petherbridge and native feels tribal and raw, an incredible groove, with this infectious energy that’s just incredible from start to finish. allysha joy’s vocals on “folding” are beautiful, as she floats on this immersive beat. the dynamic and atmospheric “the loop” is another memorable moment on the album, while “andre espeut’s vocals on “here to learn” are just so soulful and uplifting. sara el harrak’s reflections on love on “sermon” are relatable and so right, while “parc de belleville” featuring wilf petherbridge is just a colourful and uplifting track, a perfect sonic representation of the warmth the sun in london has been bringing these days. the oasis is the perfect ambassador for a dance project representing the colourful and warm energy of london life. when the sun’s out.
