a few thoughts: peruvian artist and researcher alejandra cárdenas (ale hop) and congolese guitarist titi bakorta have released a stunning body of work together, taking influence from congolese soukous and folk sounds, with colourful and infectious latin grooves that have a bounce and energy to them that are just incredible from start to finish. from the frantic energy of the opener “una cumia en kinshasa” to the atmospheric wonder of “nitaangaza”, mapambazuko is an electronic, psychedelic masterpiece, as both artists craft an immersive sound celebrating the eclectic and vibrant energy of their respective cultures and musical legacies. the intricate drumming, the percussion and the guitar melodies evoke feelings of joy and movement. remixes from kmru, flora yin-wong and ale hop help reimagine the engaging and disorienting rhythms throughout the project.
