a few thoughts: alto saxophone and jazz legend john handy released a gem of an album back in 1977 called carnival. i bought this on vinyl recently and think it’s a stunning, complete body of work, with light, beautiful piano and saxophone-driven melodies, as well as a joyful energy to it. the light touch of the opener “carnival” and the subdued, sensuality of “alvina” are both immersive and stunning records, while the upbeat energy of “watch your money go” makes for a high energy, while the gorgeous guitar driven melody of “i will leave you is an excellent and expressive moment. “love rejoicing” is my favourite song on the album by far. it’s a groovy cut, with meandering and intertwining saxophone and guitar melodies, with a suaveness to it that makes it a funky cut with tons of personality. his saxophone playing builds throughout. there’s a playfulness to the track that is just so infectious, capturing john handy’s colourful personality and artistry. the quirky and sexy “make her mine” is another expressive moment, as john sings to the lavish and beautiful saxophone and guitar leads throughout. the piano and saxophone led ‘all the things you love” is a moody, sensual and emotive cut, while “christina’s little song” is an expressive, lovely closing track that features some incredible piano-led grooves that bring a spiritual, joyful energy to the album, and is a beautiful way to conclude a bright, buoyant and engaging album.
