a few thoughts: djrum has been a pioneer of the dub and drum-heavy electronic music scene here in the uk for about a decade now. i discovered him a few years ago via his 2011 album mountains, a riveting, punchy and heavy techno-y album that showcased his ability to create moody, meandering and and entrancing electronic soundscapes. meaning’s edge is his most recent body of work a riveting 5-track project that features some lush, melodic yet frantic and jittery production. “codex” has the booming, bass-heavy sound i’ve come to love about his music, with quirky synth-melodies and effects that bounce around the ever-dynamic track. the synth melodies halfway through the track give it an atmospheric tone and energy that is just infectious throughout. the jittering keys and light, melodic synths and gorgeous flute on “codex, Pt. 2” are soothing and pleasant to the ear, while the jittery, fast-paced rhythms of “crawl” have these gorgeous synth melodies and wind instrumentation that are both atmospheric and feels raw and almost tribal. there is a lightness and gentleness to the beginning of “frekm, pt. 1”, with its melodic synth melodies and effects, before bursting into life with a bass-heavy groove that’s just incredible. “frekm, pt. 2” closes the project out with another dub-heavy, punchy groove and energy to it that captures the intensity of djrum’s music. with meandering flutes, synth leads and heavy drum compositions throughout, meaning’s edge is a varied, eclectic dance album that’s one of the more exciting electronic albums to come out recently.
