a few thoughts: talented soul singer dawuna has been on my radar for a little while now after having discovered his 2021 album glass lit dream last year. the eclectic and raw production style of that album was incredible to me, as well as dawuna’s sensual and beautiful vocal performances throughout. it was one of the most unique new electronic / soul albums i’d listened to at the time i’d listened to it, so was naturally drawn into his hypnotic compositions. naya, his newest project, originally came out late last year unmastered, and has now been re-released mastered and sounding as sweet, soulful and beautiful as expected. the rumbling “on my way!” opens the album out with ambient instrumental, before flowing into the funky, bass-heavy “eddie’s song”, with an infectious melody that dawuna sings over sensually. the rumbling bass on “thumpur” is heavy, while the dynamic drumming on “poppin”, with emotive guitar leads and vocals makes it another great moment on the album. the emotive and moody “work”, with its incredible drumming and dawuna’s soothing, sensual vocals, is another standout on the album, as he sings effortlessly over the raw, funky basslines and synth melodies, as the subtle percussion adds to the texture of track. the guitar-led groove of “brian” is so sensual and sexy, while “diaspora” also has a moody, reflective and sexy melody that is complemented by incredible drumming and bass groove throughout. the subtle grooves of “miss thang” are great as well, a subdued yet powerful track. dawuna’s vocals on “govinda p” are just stunning, with the gorgeous guitar leads throughout adding to the sensuality of the track, as he speaks about his vulnerabilities during times of uncertainty. it’s a revealing and heartfelt track that is just so powerful from start to finish. the immediate drum and bass grooves of “naya” are incredible, with an air of optimism in dawuna’s lyrics. “home” closes the album out with a short soul loop, bringing the album to a reflective closer. dawuna’s energy on this album is one of real sensuality, vulnerability and passion. with soulful, funky and emotive compositions, he’s able to create an immersive listening experience that showcases his range as a both a composer and vocalist.
