a few thoughts: with london already having a rich recent jazz history and legacy, it’s no surprising that new bands are emerging with exciting and eclectic new sounds. oreglo is a quartet consisting of c-sé on keys, linus barry on guitar, nico rocco on drums and teigan hastings on tuba. their debut project is titled not real people, and is a 7-track ep with dynamic and eclectic compositions, ranging from heavy, rock-inspired compositions on tracks like the opener “J.A.C.K.”, with explosive riffs over dynamic and emphatic tuba, basslines and drumming throughout. the brief but groovy “oreglo theme” is fantastic. the meandering keys on “peck” are incredible, and complemented by intricate drumming throughout and an emphatic guitar riff, while “levels” is a dizzying track with incredible keys and guitar grooves that intertwine throughout, making it an immersive moment on the ep. “comet” featuring bel cobain is a dub-inspired jam, with a gorgeous melody and vocals that add a soulful, ethereal quality to the track. the disorienting and frantic “opedge” is a heavy, triumphant, tuba-led piece, with swirling keys and wind instrumentation that brings this crazy intensity that’s just incredible from start to finish. the melodic and light “peck reprise” has incredible guitar leads, tuba and key compositions that are colourful and light, making it a beautifully reflective way to close out the project. the chemistry between all members is so seamless and natural, and each member gets their moment on the album.
