a few thoughts: south london-based producer, drummer, dj and graphic artist hector plimmer has been making timeless records for the last decade or so. he’s back with a new 7-track ep titled duality. recorded during a time of grief and sadness, hector has channelled his creativity with melancholic yet beautiful energy. “water flows” opens the album out with delicate electronic loops and arpeggios that sing throughout the track. prolific and consistent, the artist has grown and matured his craft, creating mesmeric electronic compositions that ebb and flow between teh dizzying broken-beat grooves on tracks like “playtime” featuring laura misch or the stellar “under”, while creating a soothing yet melancholic energy on tracks like “grief loop” and the ambient “tipping point”. the sequencing of tracks is impeccable, creating seamless transitions that feel like they sonically paint an emotive story from start to finish. “soft laughing” closes the ep out with a dark, unassuming track, with a groovy bassline and eerie synths that hover over the subtle yet heavy drumming. it’s a fitting way to close a personal, vulnerable project, and hector plimmer has gone beyond my expectations yet again.
