a few thoughts: youthsayers is a south london community project established in 2016 by robin hopcraft and idris rahman of the legendary soothsayers, with the aim of providing opportunities for talented young artists to further their passions making music. don’t blame the youth is their debut album, a vibrant and important body of work that poignantly showcases the talents of current youthsayers members and their recent alumni. over 8 richly composed and textured tracks, the band really shine, with immersive afrobeat and jazz compositions that feel vibrant, energetic and fun. the dynamic drum rhythms on “jjd” kick the album off with an explosive, saxophone-led composition that is hypnotic throughout. the infectious afrobeat grooves on “eagle song” are lively and emotive, while the dub and ethio-jazz influences are immersive and stunning on “ethiopia”. “we keep playing” has this playful rhythm and soulful vocals over an incredible reggae melody, while the dynamic, drum-led energy of “candance of meroe” is another highlight, with its rhythmic drumming, basslines and swirling wind instrumentation that captures the energy of the band poignantly. “citizens not subjects” is another emphatic track with its grand saxophone leads and an intensity that is engaging and dance-inducing. the slower-paced, reggae groove of “goodnight rico” is moodier and more reflective in energy, while the upbeat “afrocat” closes the album with a dynamic, feel-good groove that once again shows the impressive talents of these young and energetic musicians. the chemistry they have is incredible as each musician involved brings their own energies, with striking, impressive compositions that gives me so much faith for the younger generation. community projects like youthsayers are absolutely vital, so to see the project come to life like this is just so inspiring. every single penny of profit from this album will go directly to the youthsayers project. to find out more and donate, check their website.
