a few thoughts: don glori’s 2022 album welcome established him as one of the fresh, exciting new voices within the burgeoning melbourne jazz scene. after two years and relocation to london, don glori has finally released his anticipated follow-up titled don’t forget to have fun. the 7-track album is full of melodic, groovy and infectious moments highlighting don glori’s versatility as a composer and arranger. with its warm and inviting composition, “pause” kicks the album out beautifully with lush saxophone-driven melodies that complement the ethereal, atmospheric soundscape of the track, with don’s subtle vocals and swirling synths complementing the colourful energy of the track. “emerald” starts as a moody, slow-paced composition with an ethereal energy to it that shifts into gear with the dynamic drumming and groovy basslines that create an energetic, entrancing groove. the bossa-nova influence on “all seeds” is evident with its drumming, as it picks up the pace with a dynamic rhythmic composition. the funky groove and beautiful vocals on “firs touch” make it a sensual, emotive track with a slow-paced groove that is just so beautiful throughout. “theme for a dream – pt. 1. lullaby” is a beautiful, emotive and ethereal moment, which leads into the dynamic and upbeat “theme for a dream – pt. 2. swimming, soaring”, with its emphatic saxophone-led composition and upbeat drumming. “theme for a dream – pt. 3. time to wake up” is a groovy yet subdued track with a funky, quirky energy that makes it a perfect way to close the album out. the playfulness in a lot of don glori’s compositions makes don’t forget to have fun for an engaging, fun listen!
