Why you should listen: G’s Us is a newly formed duo consisting of AJ Suede and R.A.P. Ferreira, two incredible emcees who are among the best wordsmiths making music today. Their observational and visceral raps about the dystopian reality around them are fascinating to listen to, and WHAT THEM DOGS DON’T KNOW THEY KNOW is exemplary of their incredibly visual storytelling. Produced by Steel Tipped Dove, the soundscapes are woozy and jazzy, but with dark and eerie undertones that capture the energy of American city life poignantly. The 7-track project clocks in at 27 minutes, but with a lot to unpack and digest. “FREAKS” featuring the legend Blu is a highlight of the album, a subtle but unsettling beat, with a flute melody that flows along with the disorienting and dark verses from all three emcees. Tracks like “JUST CHOMP” and “RAGE QUIT” are claustrophobic and cacophonous in sound, with the former track’s beat switch giving a more atmospheric and uplifting tone, as both AJ Suede and R.A.P. Ferreira spit effortlessly, referencing jazz legends and spitting abstract and verbose lyrics that show their talents as writers. The jazzy and colourful vocal samples on “PREACHER” are infectious too, making it a perfect way, along with AJ Suede and R.A.P. Ferreira’s incredible verses, to close the album out. It’s a short but concise album that showcases both emcees’ talents as writers and abstract storytellers.
